Volney Black, Velna's father, was a long time railroad engineer on the Union Pacific Railroad, for many years on the giant coal-burning steam locomotives on freight trains, and after the diesels were introduced in 1957, he was an engineer on the UP passenger streamliners for the remainder of his career.
